Digital communication has become the primary way to reach an audience in recent years, regardless of the industry. Meanwhile, in order to grow, companies need to grasp new technologies, including content management systems, to stay ahead of the competition.

As the CMS market evolves, choosing the right technology might be challenging. For that reason, we surveyed 301 professionals working for APAC-based companies in various industries to release The State of Content Management 2022. The study covers such insights as:

  • Which CMSs are most popular?
  • What are the main requirements for a CMS?
  • How do companies use their CMSs?

Below you'll find the key facts from the report that will provide more details on the topic.

The headless CMSs have already captured a significant part of the market

The division between using monolithic and headless CMSs

Despite traditional (monolithic) CMSs still taking the prevalent market share with more than 66%, headless solutions have already reached 10%, which is a promising result for relatively new technology. However, the shift to headless architecture is relevant not only for the APAC region but is also actively growing worldwide, as we found in our global research. According to an international study, almost 35% of companies all over the world have already switched to headless. Meanwhile, 24% of APAC-based respondents said that their companies use both types of content management systems.

Responds to the question on how users perceive headless architecture

This is how respondents answered the question: What is your opinion of ‘headless’ CMS architecture?

At the same time, 46% of those surveyed mentioned that they are considering moving to a headless CMS, meaning the percentage of traditional systems will only decrease in the upcoming years. The main reasons behind these changes are the technical scalability, security, and the possibility of creating omnichannel experiences offered by the headless solutions. According to the survey, the top 3 crucial features are security, website speed, and ease of use for content creators

The security issue is a big concern, as more than 67% of respondents identified it as a critical content management system feature. Meanwhile, 61% of respondents expressed concern about the security of their current CMSs. Indeed, as we discovered in one of our most recent reports, data protection has long been a top business priority. Headless CMSs are more likely to gain a larger market share in the nearest future because they provide a higher level of security.

Website speed is another pain point for many companies. In a world where customers would probably close the page if it loads too long, businesses strive to increase performance in all possible ways, and choosing headless architecture is one of them.

Finally, one of the features that businesses are looking for is an easy-to-use interface for content creators. When content teams have more freedom to create, modify, and post content, they don't need to involve developers who can focus on more technical tasks instead.

The following three features are related in some way to the previous one because they all address the needs of content creators and make their work more efficient. A convenient content repository (40%), the possibility of setting workflows (39%), and a visual editor or the ability to preview content before publishing it (30%) were identified as essential content management system features. This means that not providing this functionality can have a significant impact on the customer's decision when selecting the technology stack for their business.
