Dimensions

The Dimensions app manages alternative versions of a story across top-level folders, one per language, region, market, or similar variant. A typical use is a multilingual website: duplicate a story into each language folder, then adjust each copy on its own. The app links corresponding stories across folders, which search engines use to associate localized versions of a page.

The Dimensions app is one of Storyblok’s internationalization approaches.

Features

The app adds the following actions:

• Clone All duplicates the story into every top-level folder.
• Create Clone duplicates the story into a folder you select.
• Merge All copies the block structure into the corresponding story in every other folder.
• Merge copies the block structure into the corresponding story in a folder you select.
• Overwrite replaces both structure and content in the destination folder.
• Clone and AI Translations duplicates the story and translates its fields with AI.

Choose fields to overwrite, or exclude from overwrite, merge, or AI translation. The app supports the Blocks field, and all actions work in both directions.

Setup

1. Install the app and set up a folder structure with one top-level folder per locale. The languages configured in the space determine the root folders available to the app.
2. Open Settings → Dimensions and select the folders the app may act on.
3. Open a story and select the Dimensions tab from the languages drop-down in the Visual Editor.

Field settings

To control how the app treats an individual field, select the field in the Block Library and choose an option under Edit field → Overwrite & Merge:

• Force overwrite by merge turns the merge action into an overwrite for the field, duplicating both structure and content.
• Exclude from overwrite action keeps the field’s content from being overwritten, so the app duplicates only the structure.
• Exclude from merge action keeps the field’s structure (blocks) from being overwritten. Use it for a block that exists in one story only.
• Exclude from AI translation keeps AI Translations from translating the field.

When you merge a story with a Blocks field, the app duplicates the nested blocks into the corresponding story in the destination folder. To keep nested blocks out of the destination story, enable Exclude from merge action on the Blocks field.

Clone and merge behavior

• Hides the Clone actions when the story already exists in one or more folders.
• Duplicates a field’s content only when the block is first added to the destination story. Subsequent Merge actions leave the field’s value unchanged.

To view the stories linked to the current one, open Config → Alternative versions in the Visual Editor. Add the localized versions to the frontend code so search engines can find them.
