# Introduction to Field Plugins (Legacy)

> [!WARNING]
> The articles in this series describe the legacy field plugin API that is tightly coupled to Vue v2.5.2. To create field plugins with other frameworks, see the [new field plugin SDK](/docs/plugins/field-plugins).

Field plugins allow you to define customized field types, such as a color picker or a Google Maps location selector. Essentially, a field plugin is a [Vue.js 2.5.2](https://v2.vuejs.org/v2/guide/) component extended with a few helpers in the `window.Storyblok.plugin` variable.

To create a new field plugin, open the Partner Portal, select **Field-types** ,and choose **New**. Enter a [unique name slug](/docs/plugins/field-plugins/development#deploy). Storyblok redirects you to the Plugin Editor.

You can also create personal field plugins only visible to you by navigating to your **Account** and clicking on **Plugins**. Create a new field plugin by clicking the **New** button.
