# Content Locking

The Content Locking app locks a story as soon as someone starts editing it, which prevents two editors from overwriting each other. Only the editor holding the lock can save. The lock is released when that editor saves or leaves the story. Everyone else sees a notice in the Visual Editor naming the current editor.

## Features

-   Lock a story automatically while it’s being edited.
-   Show who currently holds the lock.
-   Release the lock automatically after a period of inactivity.
-   Save the story automatically before the lock times out.
-   Hold the lock across automatic saves made by the [Autosave app](/docs/apps/autosave).

## Setup

Open **Settings** → **Content Locking** and enable **Automatically unlock a Story after user inactivity**. Set the inactivity period and the countdown duration in minutes, and optionally enable the automatic save that runs before the timeout.

When you also use the Autosave app, enable **Keep the content locked after autosave** in the same settings.
